Chiropractic is the third health profession in the world and although in Spain is not yet fully recognized.
Every time, there are more people who know us and who take care of their health with us. We heard many patients who in their first visit, believed that chiropractic was one of the things that we tell you next … for example, osteopathy.
First of all, chiropractic is NOT anything of all this:
A chiropractic adjustment is not the same as a chiromassage. What is chiromassage?
‘Quiros’ means ‘hands’, along with the concept of kneading or squeezing gently. So, literally, it means ‘hand massage’ or ‘manual massage’ and it is used to differentiate it from the usual massages that sometimes use electrical appliances and mechanical instrumentation.
Chiropractors are not the same as physiotherapists. What is a physiotherapist?
Physiotherapy is an official university education in Spain. It uses physical means such as cold, heat, water, electricity, manual therapy and therapeutic exercise to treat the problem. They usually add some massage with a recovery purpose. So, they focus on the affected area in this way; but they DO NOT focus on the central nervous system.
Osteopathy is not the same as chiropractic. What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is regulated as manual therapy performed by physiotherapists; so, an osteopath must have a regulated valid physiotherapy title in the national territory. And then do a ‘master’ in osteopathy. Its intention is to improve any biomechanical alteration of the body, with emphasis on the circulatory system and the function of the organs mainly, using manual manipulations in the affected area.
The massages are massages.
The massages are different movements that are made with the hands. With the purpose to “treat” the part of the body that the massagist wants for relaxing the muscles of the zone that he’s working on it.
Pharmacology is totally different from chiropractic vision.
All medical products are aimed to cancel the physical symptom of a disease without going to the root of the problem. It’s like having humidity in your home and hang a painting on the wall so you do not see it; it covers the problem but you do not fix it.
In addition, taking medication, for example the knee, can make your general circulation or your stomach worse. Many patients come to the office with varied and opposite medication that is counterproductive to their health.
What makes chiropractic so different, then?
Outside of Spain, chiropractic is a regulated and very common health profession (it is the world’s third most important health profession) and although there is no regulation for the profession in Spain. There are already two universities that offer it, one in Barcelona (Barcelona College of Chiropractic). The other, in Madrid (Madrid College of Chiropractic). Chiropractic is a university career, that last between 5 and 6 years, with the same agenda as in medicine, changing surgery by identification technique and correction of vertebral subluxations (you can see it here).
It is a health profession that works on the central nervous system (the brain and the nerves) by relocating the vertebrae to their correct position, in order to improve the functioning of your entire organism.
It is the only profession that seeks and corrects “the root” of the problem; just as in gardening, if we want to eliminate weeds we have to remove them from the roots so that they do not sprout again; if we do not attack and identify “the root” of a physical problem, it will return.
Your body lives and works thanks to your central nervous system, that’s your brain and your nerves. The nerves are like electrical cables that communicate the brain with the rest of systems, organs, muscles and bones, tissues and cells. Each one of them knows what they have to do thanks to your nervous system. But if the nervous system fails, all those who depend on it will also fail. And errors will accumulate creating problems.
Because the nervous system is so importan.
It is protected by bone (the skull and the spine) and therefore, chiropractors pay special attention to the “back”, because that is where you have the spine. Your spine consists of 24 vertebrae, and any of these segments can lose its alignment with the other. In addition, your spine articulates with your skull and pelvis, and can do it right or can do it wrong. Chiropractors do not only look vertebrae, what they do is to determine how your nervous system works, they look for any interference (vertebral subluxation) that may exist. And they correct it with a specific vertebral adjustment to restore the normal flow of your body.
Chiropractors mostly use their hands to identify and correct subluxations. But they could also use specific instrumentation, such as the “activator” or the “percutor.”
Remember, Chiropractic reconnects
Most importantly: Chiropractic reconnects your brain with the rest of your body. So that you can return to function to the maximum of your potential, and thus increase your level of health and well-being.
